The sad and tragic Lindsay Clancy story. Due to the intense interest in this story here and around the world, I obviously dealt with the trial as it unfolded. However, I refrained from making any real conclusions until that trial was over and I had a few days to pray over what clearly has become a very polarizing issue. You have a mother killing her young children, something that sadly happens too often. You have the whole mental illness issue that I have been dealing with for the 27 yrs Liveprayer has been online and over the nearly 24 years of Liveprayer TV. So today I want to share with you my thoughts and how this heartbreaking event is viewed through a Biblical lens.

Lindsay Clancy, a former nurse from Duxbury, Ma. strangled to death her 3 young children Cora 5, Dawson 3, and Callan 8 months. That evening she had sent her husband to pick up food at a local restaurant and a prescription at the drug store. It was in that time he was gone that she murdered her children and then tried to kill herself by cutting her wrists and neck before throwing herself out of a second story window. She hit the frozen ground and suffered permanent spinal injuries leaving her paralyzed from the waist down.

Clancy was eventually charged with 3 counts of first degree murder and her trail began in July of this year with a jury of 9 women and 3 men. The 5 week trial featured 80 witnesses including experts on both sides, and 300 documents and exhibits. It ended on September 4th in a mistrial as 11 jurors voted to acquit Clancy. but one male juror refused to move off of his belief she was guilty. In the final days as the jury was deadlocked, the jury asked the judge to explain “reasonable doubt.” 3 female jurors including the jury foreperson recently stated in an interview that the lone holdout said he had reasonable doubt but couldn’t get past the fact Clancy murdered her 3 children.

As things stand today there will be a court hearing on September 29th where the State prosecutor will determine whether to retry Clancy or not. Normally in a high profile case the prosecution almost always retries the individual, so it is virtually a given that Clancy will be retried, though it remains to be seen if she will once again be charged with first degree murder. However, the fact that 11 of the 12 jurors voted to acquit has to be a consideration for the prosecution. We will find out on the 29th how they decide to proceed.

Three quick issues before I share my personal thoughts looking at this tragic story from a Biblical viewpoint. First, Clancy’s attorney asked President Trump to pardon his client, but the legal reality is the President has no pardon power over a state charge, only Federal. Second, sadly we already have at least one copycat killing. A woman in Illinois was texting about the Clancy trial and a few hours later she killed her 2 year old child and tried to kill herself but survived.

Third, we know very little about Clancy’s husband who divorced her after the killings, but in less than a year was re-married. My only comment is that if my wife had a hangnail I would know about it, let alone the clear mental issues his wife had and the incredible number of hardcore drugs she was taking. People deal with life-changing horrible events differently, so I’m not making any judgment other than I do wonder where he was in regards to what was a clear multi-year mental illness his wife was battling.

My personal thoughts boil down to one word, EVIL. I don’t know how anyone could argue that killing these 3 innocent children was not an act of pure evil. Not just one act but four, killing three separate children and the attempt to kill herself. As those who follow Liveprayer know, for 27 years online and the nearly 24 years on TV I have railed against the mental health CRISIS in this nation and the fact that the mental health infrastructure that used to exist has all been dismantled since the mid-70s. Today the only resemblance of a mental health infrastructure we have is the prison system where the only real treatment is to keep people drugged 24/7!

In the interview with the 3 jurors, they mentioned that one of the big reasons 11 voted to acquit was they felt the prosecution was very cruel and dismissive of the mental health aspect of this tragedy. Nobody can seriously talk about the Clancy case without dealing with the very legitimate mental health issues she was dealing with. Her attorney made a very good case that the system failed her at every turn. That fact was born out by all of mental health professionals she met with, and in the end all she received was 13 different hard core drugs. She even called the suicide prevention hotline one night and they told her they couldn’t help her since she didn’t have a plan to kill herself.

In addition to these mental health issues, it is alleged that Clancy also was dealing with postpartum psychosis. Again, this is a very real condition that many women deal with to some degree. I can assure you in over 3 decades of ministry we counsel and pray for women all the time dealing with some degree of postpartum psychosis. Please DO NOT try to formulate a firm opinion on the Clancy case without factoring in the mental health issues since they were very real and contributed to the evil that unfolded.

Having dealt with the mental health issue, we now have to deal with her literal actions. She premeditatedly sent her husband on a food and drug store run in order for her to have the time to kill the three children. I have wondered why she didn’t kill the children when he was at work where she would have plenty of time to carry out these murders and to kill herself. Some things we will probably never know. However, people at some point have to be held responsible for their actions and the prosecutors correctly charged Clancy with the 3 counts of first degree murder.

So here is where we are at. Clancy MURDERED her 3 children, that is not in dispute. Clancy suffered from mental health issues, that is not in dispute. So the choice is does she go to prison for the rest of her life? Does she go to a mental hospital where she gets evaluated every so many years with the very real possibility that if the doctors agree she is “healed,” Clancy would be freed to go on with her life?

I have no doubt the court could fashion an order where Clancy would be confined to a mental health facility that she could never be released from, or if that isn’t possible, she must be held for a minimum of 30 years. She is currently 36 years old. That would make her 66 years old, well past child bearing years. She is also confined to a wheel chair the rest of her life so her ability to live a normal life is over already.

Clancy MUST be held accountable for her acts, SHE MURDERED HER THREE CHILDREN! Is putting her in a prison setting where she will get ZERO help for whatever mental health issues she suffers from the answer? They will simply drug her for the rest of her life. Clancy has been at Tewksbury Hospital, a state-run psychiatric facility, for the last 3 years already. I don’t believe for a second confining her to Tewksbury for the rest of her life, or a minimum of 30 years is in any way letting her off for her crimes.

If she had no mental health issues, I would be at the front of the line calling for the death penalty. Sadly, mental illness is just as real as a broken leg or cancer. Any hope of a life in the future went out the window when Clancy literally threw herself out of that second story window and became permanently paralyzed. Pray for her to come to know Jesus as her Savior. Pray for the prosecutor, her attorney, the judge, and a future jury if she is retried that they will seek Divine wisdom in the decisions they make.

Sadly evil is a very real part of this fallen world we live in. However we know that God will defeat evil in the end. In the meantime, as Christians we do our best to live our lives in a righteous manner. We strive to show the love of Christ and God’s mercy as we are confronted with the issues of this fallen world along our journey. I realize this is a very passionate issue for many people. Virtually everyone has taken up their positions either that Clancy should rot in prison, or even be put to death, while the other side wants to give her a pass due to the mental health issues she faces. Mere men will ultimately decide her fate, but pray with me they will seek the Lord’s Divine wisdom as they make their decisions. Amen!

(Liveprayer Daily Devotional from September 12, 2001)

It is 10 p.m. on Tuesday night, the 11th of September as I write this Devotional. I am absolutely drained as I type these words. I have been in prayer the last hour, asking God to speak through me to help put this watershed day in US history in some perspective for you. First of all, thank you for joining me this morning in what turned out to be an incredible prayer effort. Less than an hour after the events of the day began to unfold, I sent a special call to prayer to over 700,000 worldwide that make up the subscriber base of this Daily Devotional.

Many forwarded it on to family and friends, and within a few hours, we had mobilized over 1 million around the world to be in prayer for the families of those who lost loved ones, for the injured, for those brave men and women in the rescue teams, the talented people in the hospitals, for our nation's leaders, and finally, for those who planned and carried out this horrific attack on innocent people. I know God heard our prayers and has been working in a mighty way throughout this tragic day. Additionally, we were flooded with tens of thousands of emails, many expressing fear over what happened, many wondering if the end is now upon us, most asking simply, why did God allow this? Let me take this time to deal with these questions, and put the events of this day in perspective for you.

Why did God allow this to happen to innocent people? There is never a good answer when these tragedies occur. To try and understand however, you must step back and look at the big picture. God made man and all creation perfect. When man sinned in the Garden of Eden, that perfection was spoiled. He was now born with sin and his environment was tainted by sin. The fact is, we live in a world where evil abounds. It is rampant throughout every aspect of creation. As part of this world, we are subject to the evil actions of sinful men around us.

Could God stop an event like this from occurring? Of course. Why doesn't He? Only God knows that answer, but the Bible teaches us that there will come a day in time when He will end this world as we know it. Don't forget, we are bound by time and space. We measure our lives with time. God is not bound by time and space. The Bible tells us that a thousand years are but a day to God. So while we may wonder why it takes God so long to clean things up, we forget that God has no conception of time. His creation will come and go quickly in light of eternity, even though it seems like a long time to us.

The fact is, all throughout human history, people are born and they die. Many die tragically, seemingly innocent of anything other than being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Nobody who got on those hijacked planes today, nobody who went to work at the World Trade Center today, nobody who went to work at the Pentagon today, thought they would never make it back home. The Bible clearly tells us that tomorrow is promised to none of us. That is why we must make the most of today, and treat it like the precious gift it is.

We must find ways to serve Him, even if that is simply being kind to someone you meet along the way. We should never take for granted our daily time with the Lord in prayer and the Word, since that is the only relationship we take with us into eternity. Never take your life for granted, since you never know when and how it will end. Until God steps in and wipes this creation away as He has promised to do one day, there will be evil in the world, and innocent people will tragically die.

Is this the start of the end times? Only God knows for sure. In my spiritual gut, I believe today was a VERY big day in the overall end time events. Any time someone tries to take a specific current event and match it up with a passage of Scripture, be VERY CAUTIOUS of that person. That is an extremely dangerous game. My gut instinct about what happened today is in this context. There is no doubt that the United States has played a special role in God's overall plan. This nation was blessed from its founding and used by God to bring millions and millions of souls worldwide to the Kingdom.

I have shared in the past how I was very concerned that in the last 40 years we have squandered our blessing through the moral decay we have allowed this nation to undergo. The destruction of the family, abortion, compromising the Word of God, have led to the United States to be much like Israel in the Old Testament. I have warned you, and have no doubt that without dealing with these issues immediately, God will eventfully take His hand of protection and blessing off of our great nation, just like He did at times with Israel.

The Holy Spirit quickened in me this morning as I watched what happened, that "God allowed this to happen to our great nation." Only God knows the day and time of the return of Christ, but the Bible says it will be in the twinkling of an eye. The Word of God clearly tells us that we are living in the last days. Today's event for me was simply more confirmation of that.

The question many are asking is, "What can I do?" Pray and serve. Today is a wake-up call for all of God's children to realize how serious this battle is. We have it way too easy here in the United States. We have the freedom to worship God any way that we want, we face minimal if any persecution, we have the resources of the greatest nation in the world. Yet despite all of that, the majority of God's children here are spiritually fat and lazy.

We pay very little cost to be called a child of God. I think about those early Christians, how they sat in the Roman prisons, waiting to be fed to the lions. They knew that there was a price to be a Christian, and were happy to pay it. I think about how a handful of common men after our Lord's death, burial, and resurrection turned the world of their day upside down with the Good News of Jesus Christ. How? They were sold out and committed to share the Gospel with everyone. They knew the price of being a Christian was their very life. It no longer belonged to them, but belonged to God.

I pray that today will be a wake-up call in your life that being a Christian has a price attached to it. So many are focused on this brief time here, instead of the eternity that awaits each of us. They forget that their role here is to be a servant, not be served. I take this message today to the masses, because the majority of the spiritual leaders of our day have no vision, they have no leadership skills, they have no fire to send the people of God out into this sin-filled and evil world and proclaim that Jesus Christ is the King of Kings, and Lord of Lords!!!!!!

My word for you tonight is quit waiting for your pastor, or some evangelist, or a TV preacher, or anyone else to do great things for God. THAT IS WHY GOD HAS RAISED YOU UP IN THESE LAST DAYS. TO DO GREAT THINGS FOR HIM. No football player ever won the Super Bowl, no baseball player ever won the World Series by sitting in the stands. You have to get out on the field and work hard every day, give it 100%, and expect God to use you to share the hope and love of Christ with this dying world.

I PRAY TONIGHT THAT YOU WILL NEVER BE THE SAME AGAIN, THAT EVERYONE WHO DIED IN THIS TRAGEDY TODAY WILL BE A REMINDER TO YOU THAT THE ENEMY IS OUT TO KILL, STEAL, AND DESTROY, AND THAT GOD HAS CALLED YOU!!!!...YOU!!!...FOR SUCH A TIME AS THIS!!!!!!

I love you and care about you so much. I am not afraid of the events of today, I am challenged by them. I see them as an incredible opportunity to share Christ with a world that is hurting, lost, and looking for answers. We have the answers for this world, and they are in a personal relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ. Bad things will happen to good people in this evil world until God brings this world to an end.

We ARE living in the end times according to Scripture. We each have a responsibility as a Christian to be about our Father's business until either Christ comes or God tells us our work here is over and calls us home. May we never forget that we must work while it is still light, that night is coming. May you and your family be richly blessed during these extraordinary times in which we live.
